FAQ & Tips
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I find my class listed for course material purchases?+-
There may be several reasons
-
The instructor hasn't submitted book information to us, so it's noted that materials haven't been determined yet.
-
You may not be in the right term so make sure you are looking under Distance for online courses and (for example: Spring 18) for on campus courses.
-
You may not be using the right department code (for example: Psychology is PSYC and not PHYS which is for Physics).
-
Books may be available as a text only option or as a package bundle that includes the text plus other item/s requested by the instructor. We also list required items available separately (ex: used book, new workbook) and as a packaged bundle (new of both required components). We also list eBook versions when available so you may see a listing for a digital eBook. You do not need to order both the eBook and the text option.
We will not send you a bill. All books ordered will be charged to the credit card or student account you will enter on the checkout screen. You will see the 'Billing Address' screen after you've logged in. Think of the Billing Address as the address your credit or debit card statement is mailed to. This information is important in the credit card verification process.
Your student id number and your financial aid are the same. It is a 7 digit number shown on your Mayville State student id card. (example: 0123456). Extended learning students: your number is provided to you in your Extended Learning Welcome Package.
Unfortunately, we are unable to process orders over the phone. All orders need to go through our Mayville State Bookstore online.

Web orders can be cancelled by logging into your account, clicking on “Track Orders” and then clicking on the highlighted order number. There you will have the option to either cancel the entire order or to cancel specific items in the order. You can also send your cancellation request to . Textbooks
-
The last day to receive a refund for the current semester is the last day to drop a class without record. See the academic calendar for date which is typically 8 days after the semester.
-
New books must be free of any markings. Bundled packages must contain all of the components and if access codes/passwords are opened, they cannot be returned for a refund. Workbooks and lab manuals are not returnable if they have been written in.
-
Requests to return textbooks from students who are withdrawing from all classes after the refund date will be considered on an individual basis. MSU ID, bookstore receipt/receipts and copy of your withdrawal paperwork are needed to process these.
Lab Kits
- The lab kits for anatomy labs that contain specimens and materials needed for dissection are not returnable. Chemistry labs are not returnable if the strapping is cut. For further return information on the Physics I and II kits, refer back to the book information details on the Course Materials page for the lab.

Full refund on general merchandise for 30 days, the original receipt or copy of the packing list is required and refunds will be given in the original manner of payment.
-
-
We recommend you use a shipping/mailing method that allows you to track your package when returning textbooks. A copy of the packing list is considered your receipt and needs to be included in the return. DO NOT SEND WITHOUT PROPER DOCUMENTATION.

-
Course material/supply charging typically begins 3 weeks prior to the start of the term and ends the last day to drop a class without record.
-
Student account charging is an optional method of payment allowed by the MSU Bookstore during the beginning of each semester.
-
Only registered Mayville State students may charge books/supplies to their student accounts.
-
Your MSU Student ID number is REQUIRED. No exceptions are allowed.
-
Products allowed on student charging: course materials, supplies, backpacks, ID holders, computer hardware, including laptops, mice, and headphones. NOT allowed: clothing/gift items, food or drink items.
-

-
Buybacks and textbook rental returns for fall semester are during finals week in December. Spring semester buyback is during finals week in May. Both buybacks take place in the Fishbowl. Summer buyback typically begins early July and continues into early August since there are many different session dates during the summer. Additional information regarding each buyback/rental return will also be posted on our website.
Keep your books in good condition. Bring in any items that came with your books. GUARD YOUR BOOKS AS IF THEY WERE CASH! Unfortunately, book theft does happen and the prospect of quick and easy cash from selling back textbooks can be a temptation for would-be thieves. Be sure to choose a way to mark your books so you’ll be able to identify if need be.
Tips
-
Save all of your receipts. If you have bought a item in error you must have your receipt for your refund. In order to protect against stolen books, we ask you for your Mayville State ID which we enter onto your receipt when you make your purchase. Your receipt ensures that the books being returned are for the right student, against the original form of payment. Do NOT send the receipt home with your parents or you will be unable to return any unneeded books. This includes exchanges.
-
Don't open any packages or access codes before going to class. We can't return opened package materials to the publisher. Your professor will give you a breakdown of what to expect in the class and usually a syllabus. You will then know how and when the book will be used in class and you can make a decision based on his or her information.
-
Watch for book return dates. Textbooks can only be returned for a refund during the first days of the semester. You can only return rental textbooks for a refund if you've dropped the class and have a copy of your drop paperwork or new schedule with you.
-
We offer a large number of our textbook titles in a digital format. Digital books are less expensive and have many features, but they are also not titles we can buy back.
-
We buy books back from our students during final exam week. If we need the book again we pay up to 50% of the current price. There are some books we are not able to buy back because of new editions or if they are workbooks with fill-ins or perforated pages. Our buyback prices can be found on our website during finals week.
-
Textbooks are one of the lowest margin merchandise areas we have in the store and therefore we're not able to discount them. Our mark-up covers the cost of the book plus shipping, labor etc.
This may be the first time you've purchased textbooks and are therefore shocked at how expensive they can be. But, when you consider all of the other expenses of a college education, books are a small portion of that entire cost. Books are expensive, but they are an investment in your education. We want you have what you need to be successful in your classes. Textbooks are an important part of your success. We allow our registered students to charge the cost of their books and supplies to their student account with their MSU ID card. Payment is due at the Business Office along with student tuition and fees. If your financial aid package does not cover your expenses, personal payment is required.
